Famagusta District Local Government Organisation President Giannis Karousos has urged the government to give hospitality businesses a limited route to resolve long-standing licensing problems.
In a proposal sent to the interior minister, Karousos said any arrangement should cover the tourism industry as a whole, with particular attention to restaurants, cafés and bars.
Time-limited regularisation process
“Tourism is not only about hotels. It includes restaurants, cafés, bars and the entire ecosystem that shapes the visitor experience,” Karousos said in a statement.
The proposed process would be simple and available for a limited period, with compliance certified by licensed professionals.
No relaxation of fire safety, public health or general safety requirements would be permitted.
Demolition and compensatory payments
The proposal calls for the demolition of all unauthorised structures built on state-owned or hali land.
Businesses would also be required to make compensatory payments for excess development and insufficient parking spaces. The money would be used by municipalities to fund projects in tourist areas.
Applicants would have the right to appeal if their applications were rejected.
“Our aim is to give hospitality businesses a genuine opportunity to comply and finally resolve a problem that has remained outstanding for decades,” Karousos said. “Once the amnesty expires, the rules must be enforced equally for everyone.”
