The Ministry of Education is proceeding with the installation of security cameras in another 73 schools, citing a significant reduction in vandalism at schools where the measure is already in place. Meanwhile, the completion of air-conditioning installations remains pending, with Education Minister Athena Michaelidou stressing the need for electrical upgrades and safe operation.
The two issues were raised before the House Education Committee during a discussion on preparations for the new school year. According to the ministry’s presentation, cameras are already operating in 102 schools across Cyprus, while the installation process has begun in another 73.
Michaelidou said the results were particularly encouraging, linking the operation of the systems to a reduction in vandalism.
Installation must be safe
Regarding air conditioning, Michaelidou reiterated the commitment to cover all schools, while acknowledging difficulties with tenders, finding staff and completing the necessary electrical work.
She said detailed figures would be presented on Friday but did not provide a specific new timetable for completing the installations during the meeting.
However, the issue of safety was also raised. Megalemos, a representative of the school boards, pointed to cases where air-conditioning units had been installed too low, creating a risk of pupils hitting them.
Despina Kyprianou, representing the Pancyprian Student Coordinating Committee, called for a clear timetable.
Secondary education parents said they are currently recording outstanding issues, including air conditioning and the certification of electrical installations, so they can raise them with the relevant authorities.
