Cyprus is set to record its highest temperature of the year, with the mercury expected to reach 43C on Wednesday, prompting an orange weather warning, restrictions on outdoor work and renewed health warnings from authorities.
Orange warning in force
The Department of Meteorology has issued an orange warning valid until 5pm, forecasting temperatures of up to 43C inland.
Temperatures are expected to reach:
- 43C inland
- 33C on the west coast
- 36C on other coastal areas
- 32C in higher mountain regions
Outdoor work suspended
Due to extreme heat conditions, the Department of Labour Inspection said outdoor work is prohibited for the duration of the warning.
Authorities warned that high temperatures and humidity may pose serious health risks to workers exposed to heat stress.
Health ministry issues advice
The Ministry of Health urged the public to:
- Stay in cool or air-conditioned spaces
- Avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 5pm
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing
- Check regularly on elderly people and vulnerable individuals
- Never leave children, elderly persons or pets in parked vehicles
Watch for heat-related illness
Early symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Severe headache
- Excessive thirst
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Rapid heartbeat
Authorities warned that heatstroke is a medical emergency, with symptoms including body temperatures above 40C, confusion, loss of consciousness and seizures.
When temperatures ease
According to the forecast:
- Thursday: Little change in temperatures
- Friday and Saturday: Noticeable decline
Temperatures are expected to gradually return to seasonal averages by the weekend, bringing relief after the current heatwave.
