A long-awaited project aimed at promoting and protecting Larnaca's Salt Lake is moving ahead, following the signing of a contract for the design and supervision of the construction of the Salt Lake Environmental Information Centre.
The project, which local authorities hope will further enhance the profile of one of Cyprus's most important wetlands by 2029, will be located within the Natura 2000 network on the site of the former leprosarium beside the main salt lake.
The contract, signed between the Municipality of Larnaca and 38251 ARCHITECTS L.L.C., is valued at €245,000 and forms part of the THALEIA 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy Programme, with co-funding from the European Union.
The contract period is 44 months, with construction scheduled for completion during 2029.
What the project includes
The development aims to create a modern environmental information centre designed to raise public awareness of the ecological and environmental significance of the salt lake area, strengthen environmental education and showcase the site's unique natural heritage.
The project will further develop and implement the architectural proposal that won first prize in a design competition.
In addition to the centre's buildings and surrounding landscaped area, the plans include:
- A new pathway linking the centre to the existing nature trail around the salt lakes.
- A birdwatching observation platform at a suitable vantage point.
- Walking and rest areas with benches and viewing points.
- Informational signage for environmental education purposes.
- Landscape restoration and enhancement through the planting of native species.
Particular emphasis will be placed on integrating the development into the surrounding environment and respecting the protected status of the Natura 2000 area.
Enhancing a key natural asset
Speaking at the contract-signing ceremony, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras said the project concerns an area of major importance to the city that had not received the attention its environmental value deserved for many years.
He described the centre as a significant step towards both protecting and promoting the salt lakes while strengthening the relationship between residents, visitors and one of Larnaca's most distinctive natural environments.
"With the signing of the contract, the Municipality of Larnaca is moving to an important stage in delivering a project that will strengthen environmental education and awareness infrastructure and contribute to the further promotion of the salt lakes, which are considered one of Larnaca's most important natural and environmental assets," he said.
Future management
Once completed, the Environmental Information Centre will be handed over to the Department of Environment, which, as the owner of the project, will assume responsibility for its operation.
The department will oversee ongoing environmental awareness, education and outreach activities linked to the salt lake area.
