The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) imposed administrative fines totalling €1,500 on two specialist doctors in June after checks identified serious shortcomings in the recording and documentation of medical activity within Gesy’s information system.
The more substantial penalty concerned an orthopaedic specialist whose clinical notes were so limited that they did not justify the medical procedures, referrals and prescriptions issued.
€1,000 fine for orthopaedic specialist
On 18 June, the HIO imposed a €1,000 fine on a specialist in orthopaedics.
According to the organisation, clinical notes recorded for a series of consultations failed to explain the basis for the medical procedures carried out or the referrals and prescriptions issued.
In several cases, the notes consisted of a single word. Shortcomings were also identified in the supporting information accompanying referrals, with the relevant fields either left blank or containing insufficient details.
Nephrologist fined €500
The second case involved a nephrologist who was fined €500 on 11 June.
During the inspection, the HIO found that the medical activity for which a payment claim had been submitted was not supported by the document uploaded to the information system.
The attached document did not correspond to the procedure declared and failed to meet the minimum documentation requirements. In particular, it did not include the examination results produced by the arterial blood gas analyser.
