Cyprus had the second-highest availability of mammography units in the European Union in 2024, according to data released by Eurostat.
The country recorded 6.9 mammography units per 100,000 inhabitants, ranking behind only Greece, which had 7.6 units per 100,000 people. Italy followed with 3.7 units.
At the other end of the scale, Poland, Czechia, Sweden and Romania recorded the lowest availability, each with 1.1 mammography units per 100,000 inhabitants.
Despite the relatively high availability of equipment, Cyprus recorded one of the lowest breast cancer screening rates in the EU.
According to Eurostat, 29.2% of women aged 50 to 69 in Cyprus had undergone a mammography examination within the previous two years in 2024.
That was the second-lowest screening rate among EU countries for which data were available. Hungary recorded the lowest rate at 27.2%, followed by Poland at 33.8%, Latvia at 38.2% and Austria at 41.3%.
