The Cypriot president is expected to meet Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders, while members of the National Guard take part in France's National Day parade for the first time.

President Nikos Christodoulides is in Paris, where he is due to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other foreign leaders after travelling to the French capital at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Christodoulides is attending the military parade held on the Champs-Élysées to mark France's National Day.

While in Paris, the President met yesterday with members of the Cypriot National Guard contingent that will take part in today's parade at the invitation of the French Armed Forces.

Addressing the members of the elite unit, in the presence of National Guard Commander Lieutenant General Emmanouil Theodorou, Christodoulides said the invitation to march on the Champs-Élysées carrying the flag of the Republic of Cyprus before heads of state and government was a great honour.

He added that, beyond its symbolic significance, the participation reflects the importance of the strategic partnership between Cyprus and France, with relations between the two countries currently at their highest level.

The President, who is due to return to Cyprus late this afternoon, is accompanied by Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou and government officials.
