European Council President António Costa is expected to visit Cyprus between 1 and 4 September, immediately after a stop in Greece, according to CNA.
The visit forms part of his annual “Tour des Capitales”, during which he will meet EU leaders in their respective capitals between 25 August and 17 September 2026.
EU budget at centre of talks
As with last year’s tour, the meetings are intended to gather the views of EU heads of state or government and help prepare for upcoming European Council meetings and international summits.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the European Union’s next multiannual budget.
“Defence, competitiveness, enlargement and support for Ukraine will be at the centre of my discussions with European leaders” during the annual tour, Costa said.
“However, the next multiannual EU budget is expected to stand out. These meetings provide a vital 360-degree view of member states’ priorities and expectations, ensuring that the work of the European Council continues to reflect the European reality,” he added.
First week of the tour
Costa will begin the tour on 25 August, meeting Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal in Tallinn.
On 26 August, he will travel to Riga for talks with Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kūlbergs before heading to Vilnius to meet Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.
The first week will conclude on 27 August with a meeting with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš in Prague.
Costa attends Kyiv summit
Costa was in Kyiv on Monday to represent the EU at a summit of the Coalition of the Willing.
Late on Sunday, he met British Prime Minister Andy Burnham aboard the train carrying them to the Ukrainian capital, where they were travelling to attend events marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
