Edek has lifted all expulsions from the party without conditions, its newly elected president, Sofia Christodoulou Makri, announced on Monday.
The decision was taken by the five-member Committee for Congresses and the Revision of the Membership Register, established following a decision by the Extraordinary Pancyprian Congress.
‘No one is left out’
Announcing the decision in a video posted on social media, Christodoulou Makri said the party was taking “a substantive, political and necessary decision” aimed at changing Edek’s direction.
“We must leave divisions behind and look forward. Because at Edek, everyone is useful and no one is left out,” she said.
The 27-year-old party leader added that Edek’s doors were open to anyone who embraced its ideology, principles and values, as well as those who acted with honesty, integrity and respect.
“Today, the first chapter in Edek’s new page is being written,” she said.
Conditions for returning members
The reversal applies to all expulsions without exception.
Former members who have since joined another party or political group must first fully sever their ties with that organisation before returning to Edek.
Those who were expelled may therefore rejoin the party with full membership rights and the corresponding obligations, should they wish to do so.
Committee approves decision
The five-member committee met on Wednesday, September 9, following a decision by Christodoulou Makri.
The move marked her first political action as Edek president and was intended to demonstrate that the decisions of the Extraordinary Pancyprian Congress would be respected.
The committee comprises the serving Edek president, Nicos Nicolaides, Diomides Diomidous, Michalis Koutalianos and Pavlos Michael.
