A Cyprus Football Association initiative used sport to promote inclusion, teamwork and participation among children living at the Kofinou reception centre.

A football event for refugee children and unaccompanied minors was held in Kofinou as part of activities marking World Refugee Day.

The initiative was organised by the Cyprus Football Association, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration and UNHCR Cyprus. It took place on June 16 at the Sotireio Sports Centre in Kofinou.

According to the association, the event brought together children living at the Kofinou reception centre and unaccompanied minors for football activities, team games and other recreational events.

It also marked the final activity of this year’s programme, which ran throughout the year with the aim of supporting social inclusion and cooperation through sport. As part of the programme, children took part in training sessions led by coaches from the CFA Coaching School.

The day ended with medals being awarded to all participating children by representatives of the CFA, IOM and UNHCR Cyprus. Food was also provided to participants by IOM.

The CFA said initiatives of this kind seek to use football as a tool for social inclusion, giving all children equal opportunities to participate, express themselves and build confidence through sport.
