Cypriot athletes Sofia Asvesta and Petros Christodoulides won two more medals for the Cyprus team at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, taking the country’s medal tally to three gold, three silver and three bronze.
According to the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC), Asvesta won gold in the women’s under-52kg judo category.
In a thrilling final against Syria’s Sumaya Iraoui, Asvesta fought for eight minutes and 20 seconds before securing the only yuko of the contest to claim victory.
Asvesta had also defeated Iraoui at the Paris Olympic Games two years ago.
Christodoulides won silver in the men’s under-66kg judo category at the “Taranto 26” Mediterranean Games.
After defeating Morocco’s Bouchita Abderrahame in the earlier rounds and Spain’s Adrian Nieto Cinarro in the semi-final, Christodoulides was beaten in the final by Serbia’s Marko Djordjic.
His silver nevertheless represented another significant success for the Cyprus team.
