Total Solar Eclipse to Be Visible Across Europe in August

Millions across Europe and the North Atlantic will witness a rare total solar eclipse on 12 August, the continent's first such event since 2006.

Millions of people across Europe and the North Atlantic will have the opportunity to witness one of nature's most spectacular phenomena on 12 August, when a total solar eclipse briefly turns day into night.

The path of totality, where the Sun will be completely obscured by the Moon, will pass over Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small area of north-eastern Portugal. Residents in many other European countries will be able to observe a partial solar eclipse.

It will be the first time since 2006 that Europe experiences such a rare celestial event.

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely covering the Sun's bright disc and revealing its outer atmosphere, known as the solar corona.

Carole Mundell, the European Space Agency's Director of Science, described a total solar eclipse as a unique event that brings millions of people together through wonder and curiosity about the universe.

She said such phenomena serve as a reminder of humanity's enduring drive to explore and understand the world around us, while also helping bring space science and technology closer to the public.

The European Space Agency (ESA) uses events like this to inspire younger generations and highlight the importance of space missions that study the Sun and its effects on our planet.

Eye protection essential

Experts are warning the public not to look directly at the Sun without proper protection, as doing so can cause serious eye damage.

Ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection for viewing a solar eclipse.

People should use specially certified eclipse glasses that meet international safety standards and wear them throughout all phases when any part of the Sun remains visible.

The only moment when it is safe to observe the eclipse without protective eyewear is during the brief period of totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun.

As soon as sunlight begins to reappear, eye protection should be put back on immediately.
