US President Donald Trump, who launched a war with Iran and has yet to deliver the peace in Ukraine he had promised, said on Wednesday that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, while taking a swipe at the Norwegian Nobel Committee ahead of this year’s announcement.
“I don’t know what their decision will be,” Trump said of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, which the Norwegian Committee is due to announce on Friday.
“They’re known for not giving it to people like me,” he added.
Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly argued that he deserves the award.
“It’s time now,” he told reporters in the Oval Office, claiming that he has intervened to end eight wars since taking office in January 2025.
“However, it was a great honour for me to receive it indirectly last time from the winner herself, who said that nobody in history deserved it more than President Trump,” he added.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who received last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, presented her medal to Trump in January.
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Among the favourites for this year’s award are Pope Leo XIV, the International Criminal Court and Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories.
