Athens: Rubio Fully Supports the Electricity Interconnection Project

A senior Greek diplomatic source says the US secretary of state’s remarks on the project show Washington’s interest. The issuance of a NAVTEX is considered a matter of days.

A senior Greek diplomatic source said it sees full support from Marco Rubio for the Greece–Cyprus–Israel electricity interconnection project.

The source noted that the US secretary of state referred to the project three times during his visit to Greece, underlining US interest in it. It also said that Athens does not interpret Rubio’s reference to «private diplomacy» as meaning «sort it out among yourselves». His reference to the sensitivities of third countries, the source added, does not amount to recognition of any right.

On the project’s implementation, the source said Greek authorities are now waiting for the French companies to submit a licensing request. Greece will then proceed with issuing a NAVTEX, which, the source estimated, would happen «in the immediate period ahead».

Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis took a similar line during today’s briefing of political editors. He said the project would proceed as normal, «according to schedule», and added that Greece would not ask Turkey for permission to continue it.

Government sources also said that issuing a NAVTEX for the continuation of seabed surveys related to the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection is considered «a matter of days».
