Disy and Akel Locked in Dead Heat as Cypriot Voter Frustration Deepens

A new opinion poll shows 67% of Cypriots believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, up from 61% a month ago, while the two main parties remain separated by a single percentage point ahead of parliamentary elections.

A new survey conducted by CYMAR Market Research Ltd for ANT1 Cyprus, carried out between 6 and 17 April 2026 with a sample of 1,009 respondents, shows the battle for first place between Disy and Akel continuing with no decisive breakthrough, while frustration with the country's direction has deepened compared to last month's reading.

The country's direction

The most striking finding is the sharp rise in pessimism about where Cyprus is heading. Some 67% of respondents said the country is moving in the wrong direction, up from 61% in the previous monthly survey by the same firm. Those who believe Cyprus is on the right track rose modestly, from 12% to 16%.

Looking further ahead, pessimism dominates on most fronts. Asked how they expect conditions to evolve over the next five years, 57% said they expect living standards and personal prosperity to worsen, 53% expect the economy to deteriorate, 52% expect the situation regarding corruption to worsen, and 49% said they anticipate a decline in social justice. Political stability drew similar concern, with 43% expecting it to worsen. The Cyprus problem was the only area where a majority expressed cautious optimism, with 52% believing the situation will improve.

Voting intention

On voting intention, Disy leads with 17%, up two points from March. Akel follows at 16%, unchanged from the previous month. Elam holds third place at 10%, up from 9%, while Diko climbs one point to 9%. Direct Democracy of Cyprus is fifth at 7%, followed by Alma at 6%. Both Volt and Edek register 3%, suggesting they would clear the parliamentary threshold.

On clarified vote, which adjusts for undecided and abstaining respondents, Disy rises to 22%, Akel to 21%, Elam to 13%, Diko to 12%, Direct Democracy of Cyprus to 9%, Alma to 8%, with Volt and Edek each at 4%.

Turnout and undecided voters

Electoral engagement appears to be rising ahead of the parliamentary vote. Some 76% of respondents said they intend to participate, up around four points from March. Half of voters said they have already decided how they will vote, while a combined 28% said they will make up their mind in the final days before the election or on the day itself.
