Debate is under way in the House of Representatives plenary over five referrals of foreclosure-related laws submitted by President Nikos Christodoulides.

Lawmakers from across the political spectrum stressed the need to resolve what they described as a long-standing and highly contentious issue affecting society for years.

The discussion has been marked by heightened tensions, with sharp exchanges between party representatives during the final plenary sitting.

The President returned five laws related to property foreclosures that had been passed by parliament on April 6, 2026, citing concerns over constitutionality, legal ambiguity and potential impacts on the economy and the financial system.

Earlier in the day, the House finance committee examined the referrals, triggering strong reactions from MPs. Some argued that the government’s stance reflects a political disagreement with provisions aimed at protecting borrowers, while in certain cases there appeared to be room for partial acceptance of technical amendments.
