The government has revoked Cypriot citizenship from 150 individuals, including 41 investors and 109 of their family members, who had acquired nationality through the now-defunct Cyprus Investment Programme, the interior ministry said on Friday.
During its meeting earlier this week, the Council of Ministers approved six new proposals to strip 28 individuals of their Cypriot citizenship. These latest decisions bring the total number of revocation rulings by the current administration to 41 since assuming office in March 2023.
In addition to these actions, Cabinet has also issued decrees for to strip citizenship for 69 individuals whose initial revocation decisions had been made between 2021 and 2023. Moreover, the revocation process has been fully completed for a further 15 individuals—five investors and ten family members.
Since the termination of the Cyprus Investment Programme in 2021, citizenship revocation procedures have been launched against 360 individuals in total, comprising 101 investors and 259 dependants. To date, the process has been finalised and citizenship documents have been cancelled for 112 of these individuals.
These revocations form part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance transparency, combat corruption, and restore the international credibility of the Republic of Cyprus, the interior ministry said.
As part of this effort, the government—working closely with the Legal Service—is finalising amendments to the Civil Registry Law. The proposed changes are designed to align national legislation with the recommendations of the European Commission and ensure that problematic practices of the past cannot be repeated.
This legislative reform represents a significant step towards greater transparency and accountability. It also reaffirms Cyprus’s commitment to moving forward on the basis of modern European values and principles.
