President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides held a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon with the newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, following the conclusion of the voting process in the north.

According to a post on X by government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the call took place following the President’s initiative.

During the call, President Christodoulides congratulated Erhürman on his election and expressed his readiness for a joint meeting at the earliest possible opportunity.

In the course of the conversation, the President of the Republic reiterated his firm commitment to contribute constructively to the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General for the resumption of negotiations, on the basis of the agreed framework and the relevant Security Council resolutions, as well as the principles and values of the European Union.

Letymbiotis added that the Turkish Cypriot leader undertook to contact President Christodoulides again in the coming period in order to set a date for their meeting.

This initiative by the President of the Republic comes at a time when Nicosia is reaffirming its commitment to the resumption of a substantive dialogue on the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the United Nations.
