Parliament on Thursday unequivocally condemned in a resolution the attacks against the Kurdish people in Rojava, describing them as genocidal actions that constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and result in civilian casualties, population displacements, and regional destabilisation.
The resolution, submitted by the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and the Movement of Ecologists–Citizen Cooperation, was adopted unanimously by the House.
The House recognises the decisive role played by the Kurds in combating the Islamic State in Syria and expresses deep concern over the release of thousands of detained ISIS members from the Al-Hol prisons, which until recently were guarded by the forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Violation of international law
At the same time, solidarity is expressed with the Kurdish people, Christian communities, and Alevis affected by the attacks, as well as with all democratic forces facing persecution. The House emphasises that the ongoing attacks in northeastern Syria by armed militias supported by the Erdoğan regime and forces of the temporary government in Damascus flagrantly violate international law.
Through the resolution, the Republic of Cyprus, in its capacity as the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, is called upon to immediately raise the issue before the relevant European bodies. Simultaneously, a call is addressed to the European Union and its member states for substantive political and condemnatory actions, including the suspension of financial support, aimed at ending the attacks and protecting civilians.
Finally, the House stresses the need for international accountability and investigation of all allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, urging the United Nations to take immediate initiatives to ensure uninterrupted, safe, and continuous humanitarian access to Rojava, with particular emphasis on the protection of food supply routes.
