President Nikos Christodoulides has approved a request for the release from prison of Kurdish activist Kenan Ayaz, the Cyprus News Agency learns.

Ayaz, arrested in Cyprus in March 2023 on a German European Arrest Warrant, was extradited to Germany and later sentenced to four years and three months in prison for alleged membership in the PKK, a charge he denies.

Rights groups describe his prosecution as politically motivated, highlighting harsh detention conditions in Germany before his transfer back to Cyprus in 2025 to serve the remainder of his sentence. Public campaigns across Cyprus have been calling for his release.

According to CNA sources, the request for his release was granted, with President Christodoulides signing it on Friday.
