The National Guard is closely monitoring the situation following an escalation in Turkish provocations in the buffer zone in recent days, with the safety of citizens remaining its primary concern, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said on Monday.

Palmas made the remarks after visiting the Conscripts’ Enlistment Support Centre, where he observed the process for submitting electronic enlistment declarations.

Responding to questions from reporters, he said it was a fact that there had been an increase in provocations by Turkish occupation forces over the past few days.

He added that the National Guard, within the framework of its duties and responsibilities, was keeping a close watch on developments, with the protection of citizens as its foremost priority.

Asked about political démarches over the issue, the Defence Minister said these were being handled by the competent ministry, namely the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
