Greece has weighed on the sweeping Tufan Erhurman victory in the occupied territories and the change in Turkish Cypriot leadership, sounding an optimistic note on upcoming developments, including an upcoming party conference on Cyprus in the framework of a Guterres initiative, possibly in November.
Foreign Minister Yiorgos Gerapetritis stressed that the Turkish-Cypriots' will to choose Erhurman as their new leader, 'opens up a new chapter of hope and expectations for the island's reunification on the basis of relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions'.
Reunification, he added, must guarantee peace and prosperity for Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the European family, noting that the Greek ministry of foreign affairs, in coordination with Nicosia, has undertaken tireless efforts following a long period of inaction in bringing the Cyprus Issue back to the UN Secretary-General's agenda and resuming informal discussions.
"We look forward to working together on next steps at the upcoming broader five party format informal meeting', Gerapetritis said, underlining that divisions have no place in the modern turbulent international landscape.
'Cyprus must convey the universal message of synthesis and unity', the Greek foreign minister concluded.
According to Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, the UNSG's personal envoy on the Cyprus issue Anhela Holquin Cuellar is expected on the island very soon to sound out the two communities and prepare for the meeting, that is most likely to take place in December.
'November cannot be ruled out however', spokesman Letympiotis said, 'there is still political time'.
