“For some time now, a video has been circulating which implicates individuals and the government in illegal practices,” said the President of the House of Representatives and DISY leader Annita Demetriou.

In a post on the X platform, Demetriou commented on the video, which allegedly involves individuals and the government in various practices. “I hope,” she said, “that it does not reflect reality. I expect the competent authorities to do the obvious.”

AKEL has called for transparency regarding the funding of the presidential election campaign, while the government is examining the case as a matter of potential hybrid activity. According to AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou, the government’s delayed response does not challenge the authenticity of what is recorded in the video circulating on social media and does not address the serious political, ethical and institutional issues raised.

Stefanou referred in particular to alleged campaign donations to the President of the Republic said to have been made in cash, in order to avoid recording an amount exceeding the €1 million limit.

He also referred to donations by business figures allegedly linked to potential governmental favours, bringing back into focus the management of a fund associated with the President’s spouse.

In a statement, DIKO President Nicolas Papadopoulos referred to the video circulating on social media over the past hours concerning the funding of President Nikos Christodoulides.

“For some hours now, a video has been circulating on social media which refers to funding of the President of the Republic. In the context of transparency, citizens are entitled to and expect explanations regarding its content,” Papadopoulos said.

His statement followed the post by DISY leader Annita Demetriou and the announcements by AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou, with all three political figures calling for further clarifications regarding the leak and transparency surrounding the funding of Christodoulides’ 2023 presidential campaign.

EDEK has also called for a full investigation into the video posted today on the X platform, which shows specific individuals discussing the funding of Nikos Christodoulides’ presidential election campaign in 2023.

EDEK statement

“With significant reservations regarding the authenticity of the video and the account that posted it, and with reasonable suspicions about the motives behind its publication, EDEK calls for a full investigation, with the aim of the government providing incontrovertible explanations through lawful and scientific means. Truth, transparency, and the reputation of Cyprus and its institutions are, for EDEK, above all else.”
