Investigations into allegations against Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos are ongoing, and he will be summoned once they reach the appropriate stage, Police Headquarters Spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos has said.

Asked by the Cyprus News Agency why the Mayor has not yet been called to give a statement, Vyronos explained that the investigators decide the timing and procedure for each case.

He told CNA that when the inquiries reach a stage where an interrogation can take place, the suspect is then summoned. He clarified that the completion of the investigative work is a fundamental prerequisite for calling a suspect. He also noted that in several cases, a person may be summoned to provide a statement more than once, depending on the needs of the investigation.

Regarding the details of the case, Vyronos stated that the investigation into the alleged assault of the Mayor’s wife is ongoing. Additionally, a complaint by a businessman regarding serious offences is being examined, as is the complaint of the alleged victim.

Furthermore, a complaint concerning alleged irregularities at the Paphos Municipality is currently under review by the Legal Service for guidance. It is recalled that the former Auditor General publicly stated via social media that he had sent a related report to the Police for investigation. Since then, the matter has been with the Legal Service.

According to the Police, the investigations are continuing and the next steps will be determined by the progress and findings of the inquiry procedures.
