Cyprus remains under the influence of the Byron weather system, which first reached the island late on Friday and has now persisted for four consecutive days. The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for severe weather, in effect until early Wednesday, with unsettled conditions expected to continue until the end of the week.

Today, skies are mostly cloudy with intermittent local showers and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. Hail may occur in stronger storm cells. Winds will blow mainly from the northeast, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, while sea conditions remain slightly rough to rough. Temperatures will reach 17 degrees inland, around 20 on the coast and close to 8 degrees in the highest mountains.

Tonight, cloud cover continues with ongoing showers and isolated storms. Winds will weaken slightly but may still reach 4 to 5 Beaufort. Temperatures will fall to 12 degrees inland, around 14 along the coast and near 4 degrees in the higher mountains, where local frost may form.

On Wednesday, the unsettled pattern persists, with extensive cloud cover, further local rain and isolated thunderstorms.

Forecast for Thursday and Friday

On Thursday, intervals of cloud and scattered showers are expected, with the possibility of an isolated storm. A noticeable improvement is expected from late afternoon.

Friday will be partly cloudy with fewer disturbances, and temperatures throughout the three-day period will remain close to seasonal averages.

Weather alerts in force

A yellow warning remains active for heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds. Reduced visibility is possible in several areas and hail may occur in isolated storms. Authorities advise the public to stay informed as the system continues to affect the island.

Guidance for residents and travellers

Residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures during this period of unstable weather.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel in mountain areas where visibility may fluctuate.
  • Secure outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds.
  • Follow updates from the Meteorological Service and local authorities.
  • If driving, reduce speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and ensure headlights are on.
