Cyprus is set to welcome the New Year under changing weather conditions, with the Cyprus Meteorological Service preparing to issue a yellow warning as coastal storms move in on New Year’s Eve.

According to CyMet meteorological officer Andreas Hadjigeorgiou, isolated storms are expected to develop from Tuesday evening, continuing through the afternoon of December 31. The warning, if issued, will mainly concern strong storms affecting coastal areas and is expected to be in force from Tuesday night until Wednesday afternoon.

Not all parts of the island will be equally affected. Hadjigeorgiou noted that the southeastern coast is likely to see less rainfall and storm activity on New Year’s Eve evening compared with other coastal regions.

From calm days to unsettled nights

Weather conditions are expected to remain mostly clear until Sunday, before the pattern shifts. Storm activity may be accompanied by hail in affected areas, while sleet or snow is forecast in the mountains on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Strong winds are also expected along the coast on Tuesday. Daytime temperatures will hover around 14–15°C, with a brief dip of 2–3 degrees possible on Friday. Coastal areas are forecast to see temperatures between 15 and 16°C, which CyMet says is normal for the season.

Evening temperatures will drop more sharply, falling to around 4°C inland, 6°C along the coast and close to 0°C in higher mountainous areas, with the exception of Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Snowfall limited, conditions improve

Referring to snowfall recorded in recent days, Hadjigeorgiou said it was light and short-lived, melting soon after sunrise.

Despite the unsettled conditions expected on New Year’s Eve, weather conditions are forecast to improve on New Year’s Day, offering a calmer start to 2026 once the coastal storms ease.
