Olivér Várhelyi said the European Commission stands in full solidarity with Cyprus as authorities work to contain the outbreak of Foot-and-mouth disease.
In a post on X, the European Commissioner noted that during his visit to the island he conveyed the Commission’s support to the Cypriot authorities managing the crisis.

“Today in Cyprus I expressed the full solidarity and support of the European Commission to the competent authorities, who are making every possible effort to address and contain the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak,” he wrote.
During meetings on Friday with agricultural organisations, livestock farmers and government services, Várhelyi emphasised that EU regulations governing the disease will be implemented without any relaxation.
The Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare stressed that the European framework for managing outbreaks must be strictly followed as part of efforts to control the spread of the virus and protect the European livestock sector.
