Police are investigating a case in which online scammers stole cryptocurrency worth €107,000 from an individual they convinced to download an application for what was presented as a job interview.
According to a police announcement, the complaint was filed with the CID Headquarters Unit. The case under investigation involves an online fraud and the theft of funds through a false job advertisement.
On 12 March, the complainant responded to a job advert for a company posted on a social media platform. The perpetrators instructed him to download a specific application onto his computer for the purpose of conducting a video interview.
After being persuaded, the complainant followed their instructions and installed the application. He later discovered that cryptocurrency valued at a total of €107,000 had been stolen from two of his digital wallets.
Authorities are examining whether the application may have also installed malicious software on his computer, enabling the perpetrators to access and extract the cryptocurrency.
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
