Cyprus entered Holy Week with generally clear conditions, but weather instability is expected to bring afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms in several areas during the coming days. A gradual rise in temperatures is forecast from Holy Wednesday.
A weak low-pressure system combined with an unstable air mass is affecting the region.
Monday forecast
Today the weather will be mostly clear at first, although locally increased cloud cover may bring a chance of light rain in western areas. During the afternoon, clouds are expected to develop further, producing local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly inland, in the mountains and possibly in the southeast. Hail may fall in areas affected by thunderstorms.
Winds will be south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, becoming temporarily strong at around 5 Beaufort along southern coasts in the afternoon. The sea will be slight to a little rough.
Temperatures will rise to around 22°C inland, about 20°C along the coasts and 10°C in the higher mountain areas.
Conditions overnight
Tonight the weather will remain mostly clear, although periods of increased cloud cover may occur. Winds will be north-westerly to north-easterly and locally south-easterly along northern coasts, generally light at around 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slight.
Temperatures will fall to around 8°C inland, about 11°C along the coasts and 3°C in the higher mountains, where frost may form locally.
Outlook for the coming days
On Tuesday the weather will be mainly clear during the morning, while increased cloud cover is expected during the afternoon, bringing local showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly inland and in mountainous areas.
On Wednesday the weather will again be mainly clear at first, but clouds developing later in the day may produce isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas.
On Thursday similar conditions are expected, with mostly clear skies in the morning followed by increased cloud cover and isolated showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon, mainly inland and in the mountains.
Temperatures on Tuesday will remain near seasonal averages. A slight rise is expected on Wednesday, while no significant change is forecast for Thursday.
