The Saint John River in Latsi, Polis Chrysochous, flowed strongly on Sunday. Despite the intense weather conditions, there was no significant inflow recorded in the dams of the area.
Over the three-day period, nearly half a million cubic meters of water reached the dams across Cyprus, which is equivalent to covering water consumption for the same three days, plus one additional day.
According to the Department of Water, the amounts of water entering Cyprus dams after the three days of heavy rain were negligible. In numerical terms, only about 130,000 cubic meters of water, which is approximately the countrywide daily water consumption, were actually stored in the island’s reservoirs. During the three-day period, nearly half a million cubic meters of water reached the dams across Cyprus, which, as mentioned, equals the water consumption for the three days plus one extra day, Marios Chatzikostis, senior civil engineer at the Water Development Department (WDD), told Politis.
“We recorded a small inflow, but not what the public might expect from the rainfall. As the Water Development Department, we anticipated a low inflow, and indeed it was low,” he said.
“To some, half a million cubic meters of water may seem like a large amount, but not for the WDD,” added Mr. Chatzikostis, emphasizing that under normal circumstances, at this time of year, enough water should be stored in the dams to cover the dry months.
