Cyprus Civil Defence has issued a series of recommendations to the public aimed at prevention and proper preparation, following a Meteorological Department warning of isolated severe thunderstorms, including possible hail, expected to affect the island. The guidance focuses on minimising risks and reducing the potential impact of extreme weather events.

Flood prevention and preparation measures

Civil Defence advises residents to ensure that drainage systems outside their homes or workplaces are not blocked and that gutters are functioning properly. For those living in flood-prone areas, particularly in properties with basements, authorities recommend creating a designated water collection pit and installing an automatic water pump. Valuable items and equipment should be removed from underground spaces. Residents with yards are encouraged to leave areas of exposed soil to allow water absorption, secure objects that could be displaced by water, repair any structural openings in boundary walls, and prepare sandbags to prevent water from entering buildings. In the event of heavy rainfall warnings, the public is urged to limit movement and avoid working or staying in basement areas.

Safety during flooding

During flooding, individuals inside buildings should leave underground areas and move to higher, safer locations. Those outdoors are strongly advised not to attempt to cross flooded roads on foot or by vehicle, bicycle or motorcycle. If caught on a flooded road, drivers should stop and change direction. If a vehicle becomes immobilised, it should be abandoned, as it may be swept away or submerged. Authorities also warn the public to stay away from power lines and avoid areas affected by landslides.

Post-flood precautions

After flooding, people should avoid returning immediately to affected areas, as conditions may have changed and hazards such as damaged roads or unstable ground may persist. Floodwaters may also be contaminated, posing health risks. The public is urged not to obstruct rescue teams and to avoid unnecessary use of telephone networks. Before beginning clean-up efforts, individuals should confirm with authorities that their area is safe, switch off electricity and water supplies, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear to prevent injury.

Guidance for tornadoes and strong winds

Civil Defence also issued advice for protection against tornadoes and strong winds. At home, residents should remove or secure objects that could be carried away, close doors and windows while leaving internal glass shutters open to help balance air pressure, and stay away from glass surfaces.

Outdoors, individuals are advised to monitor the path of a tornado, move away from its trajectory and avoid areas where debris could cause injury. If unable to escape, they should lie face down in a low-lying area and protect their head. For strong winds, the public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors where possible, and secure loose outdoor items such as pots, furniture and signage. Activities in coastal and marine areas should be avoided, as should passing under large trees, signs or balconies. Civil Defence also called on employers to take appropriate measures to safeguard workers performing outdoor tasks, including temporarily suspending operations where necessary.
