A new digital initiative by Ayia Napa Municipality allows visitors to explore Sotira's Byzantine chapels through interactive maps, virtual tours and historical content.

Ayia Napa Municipality and the municipal district of Sotira have created the digital "Sotira Byzantine Route," with the support of the Famagusta Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP Famagusta) and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

The initiative is described as an important step towards highlighting the rich history, cultural heritage and unique identity of Sotira.

According to an announcement, Sotira's historic Byzantine chapels have stood for centuries as enduring witnesses to the area's faith, history and cultural continuity. Each church and chapel tells its own distinctive story, preserving traditions, legends and memories passed down from one generation to the next.

With the aim of protecting, showcasing and promoting this valuable religious and cultural heritage, the municipal authority has created a single thematic route connecting all of the area's Byzantine chapels.

The initiative forms part of Ayia Napa Municipality's strategy to highlight the distinctive characteristics of each municipal district by promoting the history, tradition and culture that make each one unique.

The Sotira Byzantine Route includes all of the community's Byzantine chapels, together with historical information and the local legends associated with them.

Visitors can explore the sites through a unified route mapped on Google Maps, as well as through a modern digital platform offering:

  • 360-degree virtual tours
  • Extensive audiovisual material
  • Historical and cultural information
  • Content in both Greek and English

The platform is designed to enhance the experience of both religious and cultural tourism.

At the same time, informational signs and relevant wayfinding markers have been installed at all points of interest, making it easier for visitors to navigate the route and learn about the sites.

"Ayia Napa Municipality continues to invest in the use of digital technology to promote its cultural heritage, offering residents and visitors modern, interactive experiences that connect the past with the present and contribute to strengthening the tourism product of the region," the announcement said.

The statement added that the public is invited to discover the timeless beauty, authenticity and Byzantine heritage of Sotira through a unique experience exploring the area's history and culture.
