The European Union is providing humanitarian assistance totalling €175,000 to support people affected by recent floods in Afghanistan, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the European External Action Service.

The funding, equivalent to more than 13 million Afghanis, will cover urgent needs for around 12,000 people impacted by flooding in various provinces.

The assistance will be channelled through the Afghan Red Crescent and will include cash support for the most pressing needs, as well as the provision of emergency shelter items such as tents, blankets and basic household goods.

The package also includes the distribution of hygiene kits, access to safe drinking water and the provision of primary healthcare services.

According to the statement, the support forms part of the EU’s overall contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund.

The European Union remains among the leading humanitarian donors in Afghanistan, having allocated more than €162 million to humanitarian partners in the country since the beginning of the year.

Earlier this year, the EU approved an additional €250,000 to support communities displaced by the ongoing conflict, again through the Afghan Red Crescent.

In parallel, the EU has organised nearly 50 humanitarian air bridge flights in recent years. Three have already taken place this year, delivering a total of 270 tonnes of food assistance.

The statement also recalls that the EU has signed a €12 million humanitarian funding agreement with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support rapid disaster response mechanisms.
