PriVenezuela was set to hold talks on Saturday with US envoys in Caracas aimed at restoring diplomatic relations, just days after American forces removed Nicolás Maduro from the presidency.
On Friday, Venezuela announced that discussions had begun with US diplomats already in Caracas to explore reopening the US Embassy.
Meanwhile, in Washington, President Trump met with oil companies regarding plans to access Venezuela’s vast crude oil reserves.
Foreign Minister Iván Hill said the government of interim President Delcy Rodríguez had decided to launch an exploratory diplomatic process with the United States, with the aim of re-establishing diplomatic missions in both countries.
John McNamara, the ambassador to neighbouring Colombia, and other staff travelled to Caracas “for an initial assessment for a possible gradual resumption of embassy operations.”
Prisoners released
Trump told Fox News that he plans to meet next week with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Venezuela said it would respond by sending a delegation to Washington.
The release of prisoners began on Thursday, with relatives waiting outside prisons to welcome family members.
Exiled Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urutía stated that any democratic transition in the country must recognise his claim to victory in the 2024 presidential elections.
