At the international climate conference in Kyoto, participants agree to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 percent from 1990 levels for the period 2008–2012, laying the foundations of the Kyoto Protocol.

Edmund Hillary dies. Together with Tenzing Norgay, he was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.
