A man was killed when a tree crushed his caravan in England, which is being affected by gale-force winds caused by Storm Gareth.

In France, 100,000 households were left without electricity on Saturday.

The death toll from the storm has reached at least 15 across Europe, as strong winds and heavy rain caused chaos for transport, forcing schools and services to close.

The storm swept across southwest Cornwall and parts of Wales from Thursday night into Friday, with gusts reaching up to 160 kilometres per hour.

Most of the United Kingdom remains under warnings for snow and ice on Saturday, according to the National Meteorological Service.

Around 28,000 homes were without power at the start of the weekend in southwest England and the Midlands.

Rail services resumed on Saturday in northern Germany, although problems continue in Hamburg.
