Greece has made clear that it does not intend to participate in any military operation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Greek Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis clarified that the EU naval mission Aspides is geographically limited to the Red Sea and does not concern the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr Marinakis also stressed that Greece calls on Iran to refrain from any actions that obstruct freedom of navigation, to ensure the universal application of international law and to return to diplomatic dialogue. He reiterated that Greece has no intention of becoming involved in the war.

Earlier, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated that “Greece stands in solidarity with the countries affected, the countries of the Gulf, and provides defensive support to Cyprus. It is not Greece’s intention to become involved in the war.”

At the same time, responding to a related question, Deputy Minister of Shipping Stefanos Gkikas said that any decision regarding Greece’s possible participation in an operation in the Strait of Hormuz would only be taken after the United States guarantees the safety of participating forces from ballistic missiles and naval mines.
