Iceland starts work on EU accession referendum over the next few months.

Iceland will be holding a referendum on European Union accession in the near future, said Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, during a press conference in Poland.

'Over the next few months we will be working towards preparing a referendum on the possible relaunching of accession negotiations with the EU', the Icelandic PM disclosed following a meeting late yesterday in Warsaw with her Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.

Frostadottir, 36, is the youngest Prime Minister in the country's history and took office in December 2024, following her party's victory in the parliamentary elections.

She leads a majority coalition government made up of the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Reform Party and the People's Party.

Reykjavik abandonded EU accession talks in 2013, but is gradually being forced to reconsider due to rising living costs, coupled by collateral economic damage from the war in Ukraine.

Polls over the past few years indicate a rising majority of Icelanders in favour of accession.
