2009 – Ship Monchegorsk Arrives at Limassol
The Cypriot-flagged merchant ship Monchegorsk arrived in Limassol on 29 January, where inspections revealed the presence of illegal military material. The 98 containers of explosives that had been seized, were left for 2 and a half years exposed in an open space next to the Naval Base, under sun, wind and cold, without any special handling. On the 11th of July in 2011, a massive explosion at a munitions dump in Mari Naval Base in Cyprus caused the death of 13 people, including army officials, soldiers, and firefighters.
2006 – Marcos Baghdatis Reaches 8th in World Rankings
On 29 January 2006, tennis player Marcos Baghdatis reached the final of the Australian Open, defeating top players such as Roddick and Nalbandian. He achieved 8th place in the world rankings.

1982 – Greek Star Aliki Vougiouklaki and Cypriot George Eliades get married in Athens
On 29 January 1982, Aliki married for the second time at Agios Nikolaos Riggillis in Athens, to the Cypriot businessman and journalist Giorgos Iliadis. The ceremony was kept completely secret, and reportedly no one knew about it, not even Aliki’s mother. Present were her close friend Moumou Eliopoulou, Nota Konopisi, and Tolis Stamatikos, a friend of Aliki.

1973 – Ilyushin IL-18 Aircraft Crashes in Pentadaktylos
An Ilyushin passenger plane of EgyptAir crashed in Pentadaktylos, Cyprus, on 29 January 1973. All 37 passengers on board were killed.
1933 – Hatzichambi Cinema Opens in Famagusta
The Hatzichambi cinema on Dimokratias Street in Famagusta opened on 29 January 1933. It had a capacity of 1,000 people. The architect was Theodoros Fotiadis and the construction was undertaken by the well-known master builder Yakoumis Pavlou.
1896 – Earthquake 8–9 Richter Scale Causes Damage in Limassol
A strong earthquake of 8 to 9 on the Richter scale struck Cyprus. The most serious damage was reported in the areas of Episkopi and Akrotiri.
