Christodoulides Honors 1974 Heroes on Invasion Anniversary

President Nikos Christodoulides says the anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion remains a reminder of Cyprus' duty to work for the end of the occupation and the reunification of the island.

President Nikos Christodoulides has issued a message marking the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on 20 July 1974.

In a social media post, the President described the day as a painful one for the country. "This morning's dawn is a difficult one for all of us. The harrowing sound of the sirens is a stab wound to our homeland."

He said the heroic figures commemorated at the Tymvos Makedonitissas military cemetery and at the site of the former Nicosia International Airport define the nation's duty and responsibility. "They define our duty and responsibility to end the Turkish occupation and to achieve the liberation and reunification of our homeland."

Concluding his message, Christodoulides wrote: "Immortal. Fifty-two years on, we do not forget."
