Yemen's Houthi rebels have declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia, effective immediately, their military spokesperson announced in a televised address. The group announced a "naval embargo against the criminal Saudi enemy, based on the principle of an eye for an eye, to take effect immediately upon the issuance of this statement."
The Houthis said the blockade was a response to what they called the unjust and suffocating siege of their people for nearly 12 years, the plunder of their resources, and the imposition of a total blockade of their ports and airports by land, sea and air.
The Houthis fired missiles at Saudi Arabia last week, accusing Riyadh of bombing a Yemeni airport under Houthi control, in violation of the four-year truce between the two sides. Those attacks were the first the Houthis had claimed against Saudi Arabia since the informal ceasefire took hold in March 2022, which followed attacks by the Iran-aligned Yemeni rebels on Saudi energy facilities.
