President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides sent an optimistic message on the course of efforts on the Cyprus problem after his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, saying "we are on the right path, based on what the secretary-general said."
Christodoulides made the comment on Wednesday afternoon as he left the meeting with Erhürman, held at the offices of the United Nations Good Offices Mission near the airport area in Nicosia's buffer zone.
The meeting between the two leaders, which began at around 4pm, lasted just over two and a half hours. Erhürman left first, with Christodoulides departing a few minutes later, repeating the same message: "We are on the right path, based on what the secretary-general said."

26 August 2026, Nicosia – The Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and the Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhüman held a constructive meeting today under United Nations auspices in the United Nations Protected Area.
The two leaders reaffirmed their utmost appreciation to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Antonio Guterres, for his recent visit to the island and for his continued support and commitment to the efforts towards a settlement of the Cyprus problem.
During their meeting, they reviewed progress regarding the way forward as defined in the recent visit of the United Nations Secretary-General to the island and agreed to intensify their meetings and to meet once a week and more frequently, as circumstances may require.
They also agreed to announce the members of the Steering Committee of the Civil Society Consultative Body tomorrow.
