A new study has identified a link between regular nut consumption and improved cognitive performance, offering another reason to include nuts as part of a balanced diet.
Published in the journal Food & Function, the research analysed data from 1,742 adults who participated in the long-running Framingham Heart Study. Researchers found that participants who consumed nuts regularly generally performed better in tests that measured cognitive function than those who did not.
Association observed even with small amounts
One of the more notable findings was that the relationship was observed even among people consuming relatively small quantities of nuts.
The study does not suggest that eating a specific amount of nuts will directly improve memory or brain function. Instead, researchers said the results point to a potential association between dietary habits and cognitive health.
The authors also noted an important limitation: the work was based on an analysis of existing data rather than a controlled clinical trial. As a result, it identifies a correlation rather than proving a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
Why nuts attract scientific interest
Nuts have long been considered a nutritious food due to their combination of healthy fats, fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds.
Different varieties, including walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios and hazelnuts, offer slightly different nutritional profiles, making variety beneficial within a balanced diet.
Scientists have examined nuts extensively for their possible role in supporting cardiovascular health, metabolism, weight management and overall diet quality.
Their high content of unsaturated fats, fibre, protein and bioactive compounds has also led researchers to explore whether regular consumption may benefit brain health and cognitive function.
Storage matters too
Proper storage is important for preserving both the flavour and quality of nuts.
Because the fats they contain can oxidise over time, exposure to air, heat and moisture may reduce freshness.
An airtight glass container can help protect nuts, while storage in a cool, dry place or, for longer periods, in the refrigerator may help maintain their quality.
Alongside incorporating nuts into a healthy diet, ensuring they are stored correctly can help preserve their taste and nutritional value.
