Cypriot researchers took part in the third official meeting of the partners involved in the CABE project, held in Ankara in April and hosted by Hacettepe University.
The project, titled Circular Approaches for the Built Environment, aims to develop and pilot circular solutions in the construction sector, with a focus on the reuse of construction and demolition waste.
Cyprus is represented in the project by the Cyprus University of Technology, the KyklOIKOdromio initiative and Strovolos Municipality.
Focus on circular construction
According to an announcement by KyklOIKOdromio, the three-day meeting brought together project partners to review progress as the project approaches the halfway point of its implementation.
Discussions focused on key areas, including the development of frameworks and digital tools to support circular economy practices in the built environment, as well as the involvement of stakeholders in the process.
On the third day of the meeting, the Cypriot project team coordinated an interactive workshop with the participation of 19 representatives from ministries, public bodies, universities, research centres and businesses in Turkey’s construction sector.
The workshop examined how stakeholders approach the management of construction and demolition waste, where they identify the main challenges, and how existing practices could be improved. Particular emphasis was placed on the application of circular economy principles, as well as institutional and technical barriers in the sector.
Findings to feed into country report
The results of the workshop will be used for the preparation of a dedicated report on Turkey and will later be compared with findings from similar workshops carried out in other participating countries.
The CABE project remains under way, with partners continuing to collect data and experiences from stakeholders. According to the announcement, the meeting in Turkey helped deepen understanding of the challenges and opportunities linked to circular waste management in the built environment, contributing to the development of practical solutions for the sector.
The project is co-funded by the European partnership Driving Urban Transitions to a Sustainable Future. In Cyprus, it is co-funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation, with the Cyprus University of Technology serving as the lead organisation for implementation.
