The UN envoy is expected on the island next week, with the Guterres framework, previous convergences and the possibility of an informal 5+1 meeting in July on the agenda.

UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to focus on the substance of the Cyprus issue during her upcoming contacts on the island.

Holguin is due to arrive in Cyprus in eight days. So far, it is known that she will hold separate meetings with the two leaders, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. It remains unclear whether a trilateral meeting will also take place, as happened during her previous visit.

According to information obtained by CNA, Holguin’s discussions will focus on the Guterres framework and the convergences reached so far. She is also expected to explore whether conditions are in place for an informal 5+1 meeting on Cyprus to be held in July.

The implementation of the confidence-building measures agreed to date will also be reviewed. The same sources said, however, that there does not appear to be any progress so far on the opening of new crossing points.

Holguin may also meet civil society organisations, as she has done during her previous visits to Cyprus, although her programme has not yet been finalised.

On Thursday night, President Christodoulides referred to a window of opportunity linked to the completion of the UN Secretary-General’s term at the end of the year and expressed his wish for a positive outcome.

For his part, the Turkish Cypriot leader has reiterated that progress in Cyprus is needed before an informal meeting abroad can take place, while insisting on his four-point methodology proposal.
