More than 1,000 people died in Spain last month during an unprecedented heatwave that swept across central and western Europe, making June 2026 the second deadliest month on record.

Spain recorded at least 1,028 heat-related deaths in June 2026, according to figures from the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid. The figure is more than double the 407 deaths attributed to heat in June 2025, which was itself recorded as the hottest June since measurements began, according to Spain's national meteorological service, Aemet.

Second deadliest June since records began

As reported by El País, June 2026 was the second deadliest month for heat-related mortality since systematic recording began in 2015. Over the past eleven years, the average number of heat-related deaths in June has stood at 328. The previous peak was recorded in 2017, with approximately 1,000 fatalities.
