The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) has begun installing 72,000 smart water meters, as part of efforts to modernise water services digitally and reduce water losses. The first phase of the project has started in area 9 in Engomi.
Where the meters are being installed
According to an announcement by the organisation, work began on 2 November and will gradually extend to:
- Latsia, area 21
- Lakatamia, areas 40 and 41
How the new meters work
The new meters use ultrasonic technology and send consumption data every day over the NB-IoT network to the EOA’s online platform. This means meters no longer need to be read manually.
They can also detect unusual changes in consumption that may indicate leaks. Consumers will be notified of these by email or text message.
Registering online
The EOA is calling on consumers to switch to a digital water bill and register on its online portal, so they can receive updates and monitor their property’s consumption remotely.
To register, consumers need their consumer or meter number and a mobile phone number.
Contract and funding
The contract to supply the smart meters was awarded to Cyta and signed on 29 April 2026.
The project is being carried out under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027” and is co-funded by the European Union.

Progress updates and the installation map are available on the EOA Nicosia website at ndlgo.org.cy/smartmeters/.
