Dozens of churches, mosques and cemeteries are being restored or prepared for conservation, as the bicommunal committee expands its work on both sides of the island.

The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage is preparing to launch a new round of restoration projects across Cyprus, while several conservation works are already under way, its Greek Cypriot co-chair Sotos Ktoris told CNA.

Among the projects expected to move forward are Panagia tou Mnasi in Morphou, Panagia Chryseleousa in Katokopia, Panagia Hypati in Agios Amvrosios, Agios Dimitrianos in Larnaka tis Lapithou and Panagia Melandrina in Kalograia.

Work is also planned at Agios Andronikos in Kythrea, where the church roof will be repaired, while mosques in Anaphotia, Kellia and Pyrga are also included in the committee’s programme.

Ongoing works include Agios Prokopios in Sygrasi, Famagusta, the Church of Timios Prodromos in Kalopsida and Agios Georgios in Karavas. The second phase of the restoration of Apostolos Andreas in Karpasia, one of the committee’s major projects, is also continuing.

Restoration work is also progressing at Panagia Apsinthiotissa, on the southern slopes of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, as well as at the mosques in Koilani and Agios Thomas.

Ktoris said work is also being carried out at more than 70 cemeteries on both sides of the island, with several of the projects expected to be completed soon.

Referring to the committee’s role, he said it had become a model of cooperation, showing in practice that understanding, shared responsibility and mutual respect can produce meaningful results in the protection of Cyprus’ cultural heritage.
