Traffic Fines Rise in North, Top Penalties Exceed €2,500

Higher fines target speeding, drink-driving and mobile phone use

 

New, significantly higher fines for traffic offences have come into force in the north. The revised penalty scale covers a range of offences, from driving without a licence and mobile phone use to drink-driving and speeding.

The highest fine has been set at €2,586 (141,786 Turkish lira) and applies to operating a vehicle without the required "T" operating permit, which is used for taxi vehicles.

A fine of €1,293 (70,893 Turkish lira) has been set for driving without a licence, refusing to provide a breath sample for an alcohol test, using a mobile phone while driving and using a vehicle without the owner's permission.

Penalties for drink-driving

Driving with alcohol levels between 50 and 100 promille carries a fine of €646 (35,446 Turkish lira). Where the reading exceeds 100 promille, the fine rises to €1,294 (70,893 Turkish lira).

Penalties for speeding offences have also increased. Exceeding the speed limit by between 20 and 40 kilometres per hour carries a fine of €129 (7,089 Turkish lira), while exceeding the limit by more than 40 kilometres per hour carries a fine of €323 (17,723 Turkish lira).

Running a red light and failing to wear a seat belt carry a fine of €259 (14,178 Turkish lira).

Driving a vehicle without a road licence: €129 (7,089 Turkish lira)

Dangerous driving: €258 (14,178 Turkish lira)

Driving under the influence of pharmaceutical substances: €647 (35,446 Turkish lira)

Failure to give priority to emergency vehicles using sirens: €194 (10,633 Turkish lira)

Violation of vehicle registration plate regulations: €129 (7,089 Turkish lira)

Driving a vehicle without a technical inspection certificate: €129 (7,089 Turkish lira)

Failure to carry a driving licence during a police check: €64 (3,544 Turkish lira)

Driving a vehicle with a defective or excessively noisy exhaust system: €194 (10,633 Turkish lira)
