Google has promoted Sir Demis Hassabis to the role of President and Chief Scientist of Google AI, underscoring the importance the technology giant places on artificial intelligence amid intensifying industry competition.
Hassabis, who was born in London in 1976 and whose original family surname was Hassapis, first gained recognition as a chess prodigy before moving into video game development and later neuroscience.
At the age of 17, he co-created Theme Park, a commercially successful video game, before studying neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, where he investigated the relationship between memory and imagination.
In 2010, he founded DeepMind with the ambition of solving what he described as the "mystery of intelligence" and applying that knowledge to broader scientific challenges.
Nobel Prize recognition
Hassabis' work gained global prominence through breakthroughs including AlphaGo, which defeated world champion Go players, and later AlphaFold.
In 2024, Hassabis and colleague John Jumper were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold2, the AI system capable of predicting protein structures with unprecedented accuracy.
The model has analysed the structures of approximately 200 million proteins and is now used by more than two million scientists in 190 countries, supporting research ranging from drug discovery to plastic waste degradation.
At the time of the award, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences described the ability to predict protein structures as a breakthrough offering enormous benefits to humanity.
The announcement also produced an unusual anecdote: Swedish Academy officials reportedly had to contact Hassabis' wife because they did not have an up-to-date way of reaching him directly.
Strong Cypriot roots
Despite his global profile, Hassabis remains closely connected to his family in north London.
His father, a Greek Cypriot from Famagusta, emigrated to the United Kingdom following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
His sister has also achieved distinction as a pianist and composer.
While Hassabis continues to be based primarily in the UK, reports suggest that the possibility of a permanent relocation to the United States remains open as his responsibilities at Google expand.
Billion-dollar success
Hassabis' personal fortune is estimated at between $500 million and $3 billion, following Google's acquisition of DeepMind for $650 million in 2014.
After the acquisition, Google retained him as the company's leader, a position from which he oversaw many of the organisation's most significant AI breakthroughs.
Now entrusted with leadership of Google's broader artificial intelligence operations, Hassabis faces what many view as the greatest challenge of his career: delivering the next transformational breakthrough in a fiercely competitive AI landscape.
